His passion for Electrical Engineering was further nurtured at the Illinois Institute of Technology, where he earned a degree that would set the stage for a distinguished career ahead. In 1970, Richard embarked on a journey of love and companionship as he married the love of his life, Charmaine.

Their union was a testament to the power of enduring love, and Charmaine remained a steadfast source of strength and support throughout their shared journey. Richard’s beloved wife survives him, holding close to the treasured moments they shared. Richard’s indomitable spirit lives on through the lives he touched, including his dear brother, Kenneth Poortinga.

A devoted father and grandfather, Richard is survived by his four sons: James (Rebecca) Poortinga, Brent (Jennifer) Poortinga, Eric (Shannon) Poortinga, and Ryan (Kelly) Poortinga. To honor and celebrate the life of Richard Poortinga, a Celebration of Life memorial service will be held on Thursday, August 17, 2023, at 3:00 p.m. at Crestview Baptist Church, Georgetown, Texas.
