Robert Hughes, who was a member of Ladder 134, passed away due to an illness he sustained during his unwavering efforts in the rescue and recovery operations following the devastating attacks on the World Trade Center. Firefighter Hughes joined the esteemed ranks of the Fire Department on September 5, 1981. Throughout his distinguished career, he displayed unmatched courage, compassion, and professionalism.

Robert served the Department with distinction and was admired by colleagues and the community alike for his unwavering commitment to protecting and saving lives. He showed remarkable bravery during some of the darkest moments in our history, never hesitating to put himself in harm’s way to help others in need.

After some years of exceptional service, Firefighter Hughes retired from the Department on September 1, 2005. Though he stepped away from active duty, his passion for the Fire Service and his sense of duty continued to shine through, inspiring all those who knew him. The loss of Firefighter Robert Hughes is deeply felt, not only by his firefighting brethren but also by his beloved family and friends.

A Funeral Mass to honor the life and service of Firefighter Robert Hughes will be held on Monday, August 7, 2023, at 10:45 am at St. Agnes Cathedral, located at 29 Quealy Place, Rockville Centre, NY 11570. To the fallen hero, we say goodbye with heavy hearts, but we shall never forget the sacrifices you made and the lives you touched. Your memory will forever live on in our hearts and in the memory of a grateful city.
