Robert Owan Obituary, Death – The passing of Robert “Bob” Owan on September 5, 2023, marks a profound loss for the community of BYU–Hawaii and all who had the privilege of knowing him. With a career spanning 44 years, Owan’s contributions to the university were nothing short of remarkable.
He retired in 2019 as the director of purchasing and travel services, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and commitment that will forever be cherished. Beyond his professional role, Owan was a beloved figure at BYU–Hawaii, known for his passion for golf. He not only managed the university’s purchasing and travel services but also coached the men’s golf team.
His coaching prowess was exemplified when he earned the prestigious title of Coach of the Year in the PacWest conference, a testament to his unwavering dedication to both his students and the sport. Robert Owan’s impact extended far beyond the confines of his workplace. He was a loving husband to Edna, who herself retired from BYU–Hawaii, and together they shared a lifetime of memories and accomplishments.
Their partnership symbolized the strong sense of community that thrives at the heart of BYU–Hawaii. The Owan family mourns the loss of a beloved patriarch, while the BYU–Hawaii community joins them in their grief. Robert’s passing leaves an irreplaceable void in the lives of his two sons and eight grandchildren. To pay tribute to Robert Owan’s life and legacy, a funeral service will be held at the Halawa meeting house on Friday, September 22. The public is invited to join in remembering and celebrating his life. The viewing will commence at 9:30 am, followed by the funeral service at 11 am. Robert will be laid to rest at the Hawaiian Memorial Park Cemetery at 1 pm, where he will find eternal peace.
